Machine Quilting Vintage Quilt Tops....LongArm Tutorial

Being in the Machine Quilting Business has given me many opportunities to deal with Vintage Quilt Tops and their owners, who often have their grandmothers tops or they have purchased them at estate sales and antique shops. There are many of us who love the 1930's to 1960's quilts and fabrics, and some of us who specialize in making them a finished quilt.

So, if you have a Vintage Quilt Top and are wondering how it should be finished or if it should be finished, here are a few guidelines to consider.

1...Are the fabrics in good enough condition that they can be gently tugged on without tearing. Many old tops that have been stored in cedar chests or plastic will rot and stain due to the chemicals released by the wood and polyurethane.

2...Are the fabrics mostly cotton. Many old tops will have a variety of fabrics besides cotton...ie..silk, linen, denim, etc. that have a tendency to ravel away at the seam or deteriorate from age or strong dye processes. Red, black and indigo are the ones to watch for rot and dye run.

3...Are the seams and stitching secure enough for mounting on the machine. Gentle tugging without coming apart, and the top lays relatively flat. Piecing that has puckers and puffs will result in overlaps and tucks.
4...Does the quality of the Piecing (craftsmanship) and the Pattern...ie..Applique or Intricate Piecing Design vs Scrap Pattern...merit HandQuilting vs Machine Quilting.
5...Does the top merit the expense of finishing either for sentimental or other reasons, and what kind of use is planned for the top once it is quilted.

Many Vintage Tops loose value when they are machine quilted. This depends on meeting the 1-5 criteria and the historical significance of the top. Let's say for the purpose of getting on with the Machine Quilting that your Top is much like the 1930's String Quilt pictured here. It meets the requirements for Machine Quilting. It was purchased at an estate sale, is hand pieced in a very scrappy string pattern, is relatively flat and square. Let's get it Quilted.

Step 1...Backing...
select a New Print fabric that reflects the time period and theme of the quilt. For this one the Red small scale floral works perfect as the thread color will blend on both the top and the back and there are many small scale florals within the top. The New Fabric will add much stability to the old top as will the New Fabric for the binding...the blue floral for this top.

Step 2...Look over the top on the Right Side to check for raveled or coming apart seams. Repair as many as you can find...the one's you miss will repaired as you quilt or after the quilt is washed. Do Not wash top before quilting. Many a stained and dirty quilt has been quilted on my machine. They will tolerate a washing much better after the stablizing of the quilting.

Step 3...Check the top for Square. Most old tops will be out of square with frayed or ragged edges. Fold in half with the fold being straight and square (not by the corner edges). Fold in half again (now quartered) with the the two folds being square. If the edges are within an inch or two of being the same leave them alone. If they are more than two inches use a rotary cutter and ruler to even them enough to mount on the machine, but not to a finished square. That will be done after the quilting.

Now, we are ready to 'Mount' the Top on the Quilting Machine.

MakeOver LeftOvers to the Storage Closet

I'm so glad to have this closet to clutter up with the stuff that won't fit into the KnittinSewinQuiltin Studio. Here's another view of the Madeover space with the MovedOver Bed! I'm going to try really hard to keep it clutter free. Yeah Right!!!!

If only I COULD move this Rack of Tops TOBE Quilted in here. I guess the picture will have to do for now. It's going to be a challenge to get them all done in 2010. Especially since Texas Mother Nature has her panties in a wad and keeps the freezing temperatures around. I wish she would Thaw Out her Thong!

I thought you might like a wider view of the entry into the Studio. Quilta..that's my LongArm Quilting Machine takes her own sweet space and does not like to be crowded. Tough Buttons, Quilta. You are going to have to adapt til you get that rack of quilts quilted!

All that 'PomPom WandWavin' was worth the work it took to do the Studio MakeOver when the WandWaver can share the space with Knittin Friends like SusanB and Gina.

What do you do when all the walls are covered with Quilts and Stuff? Ya start stacking pictures on the shelves. I'll have to Hang them Higher when the shelf begins to get stacked with the YARN I'm NOT Buying in 2010!

Of course there is the matter of the Stacked UFO Baskets! Here's my 'ThinkinTheory' on buying more YARN! "What I have in the UFO Baskets, on the Shelves, in the Baskets on the floor, under the bed, on top of the shelves, stashed behind curtains and stuffed in HERE is ALREADY PAID FOR". Besides some of it was FREE, SWAPPED, BARTERED and BARGINED for. So, with all those $$$$$ I saved last year, I can go BUY, BARTER, BARGIN and BEG for YARN this year! Works for ME!!!

As predicted Lynn and Sherilyn did become Mr. and Mrs. Money.
And for sure Sherilyn has heard that not so new broken record over a million times.

Hey, Sherilyn, could you get me my notes on that new song?
Hey, Sherilyn, how many grandkids do we have?
Hey, Sherilyn, how many moves does this one make?
Hey, Sherilyn, are we about up with the McPeaks? Moves, not grandkids?
Hey, Sherilyn, do you have any of those nerve pills you made up for riding with Della?

No, Lynn, I took the last one on your question about how many moves have we made.

Lynn and Sherilyn moved from Odessa to Sterling City in 2006 for Lynn to serve as the minister of the Sterling City Church of Christ. It was their hope to live “the quiet life”. To assist with “the quiet life” dream, Sherilyn retired from Child Protective Services in 2008, but finds herself called back from time to time to do special projects.

Meantime, Lynn has found ways to not only minister to his church, but has extended his ministry to the other faithful in Sterling City by opening his church to all of the community's congregations on Thanksgiving for an all-city worship-through-song fest, as well as participating with the other churches in their special programs. Lynn serves as President of the Sterling County Nursing Home Board, Secretary/Treasurer of the Lions Club, and is a member of the Sterling County Child Welfare Board in addition to his minister duties. Quiet life?

Lynn recently made the decision to retire from full-time ministry. He has been given the opportunity to go to work for a safety inspection company which will require a move back to Odessa. Since their daughter in Odessa presented them with their 7th grandchild earlier this year, this will give them the opportunity to live “just around the corner” from their new granddaughter and her two big brothers. Sherilyn will also have a new job as a nanny to the new grandbaby while their daughter teaches school. They are excited about giving up their quiet, laid-back lifestyle for an opportunity to live closer to their grandkids once again.

And Now Back To The Past and The Money Show!!!!

Arlen says, "Who wrote this stuff"?
Anne says, "I tried to tell him that Hey, Hey Paula was alot eaiser to rhyme than Hey, Hey Sherilyn".
TCay says, "Well, Paul Charlier he's not, and we'll probably get sued."
Kila says, "Let's try Hey, Hey Sam".
Lynn says, "Give me a break, I think I've got it...if I hold my mouth just right."

And so, now you know from whence came the inspiration for the
Lynn and Sherilyn 1965 Lobo Prophecy.

That's right...All those hours spent in 'Auto Mechanics' at MHS has lead to

Mike's Old is New Again Car Restoration.

In this PhotoShoot, Mike models a Red Corvette Convertible ReDo. After the restoration from top to bottom is done, Mike sells the cars to collectors via EBay and Car Collector Contacts.

Here are a few photos of the cars Mike has restored.

The Newest TopModel in the Neace Family is Grandson Jake. He's modeling the latest in Proud Grandmothers...His GrandVicki.

Mike and Vicki reside in San Angelo, Texas. They own Neace Financial Group. Their daughter Kristin and husband are also MHS Graduates and reside in San Angelo, and that's a 'GoodThing for Grandparents'.

Mike and Vicki are the Directors of the '65er Golf Tourney.

Maggie and husband Steve Brown bought Blaine's Pub in 2008.

Sara Flores Gilbert gives this report..."Rumor has it that Maggie Welch Brown was out on the town at San Angelo's Blaine's Pub...Dancing on the Tables. (Rumor confirmed with these pictures.) There she was 'Totally out of Control'! I jumped up there on the Table and got her down.....she was having toooooo much fun! After saving her from a 'WildNCrazy Crowd'...She jumped back on the table and started Dancing Again!" So, Sara.....If You Can't LickEm...JoinEm? Right? Right!

After seeing Maggie and Sara in action...SuKnitWitty...MHS SandStorm Reporter, decided to check out Blaine's Pub and get the 'RealScoop' on the Maggie/Sara Incident. It didn't make the SanAngelo Standard Times....I checked the Archives.

Meet Don Baker, Class of 1965 Lakeview High School, San Angelo, Texas.

'Baker' caught me taking pictures outside about 10 o'clock in the morning. He's the DayShift Bartender/Janitor/BPub Historian/DoItAll Guy. I was kinda GRIT (GirlRaisedInTexas) embarrassed about being caught RedCameraHanded....the Bad Manner Thingy. 'Baker' was a real TexasGent, even after I Flashed him in the face as he opened the front door. He asked if I'd like to come inside and take pictures....had that 'WhathaHell is SheAbout Look'...but, like I said, he was a real TexasGent.

I Stepped in and....Well.....Here YaAre...Blaine's Pub...Bar of Your Dreams!

Meet JimmyDon Cox...Class of 1969 Lakeview High School, San Angelo, TX. JimmyDon is a 'Local/Regular' at Blaine's Pub. Now, JimmyDon is also a BPub Historian....you see...He's been doin bizness at that very table with some of the 'Big Names' whose pictures cover every wall. Why, Heck, Shugar, his picture is right up there too....right next to Willie's.....daughter. So he must be a celebrity, too. I was thinkin "Ohoooo, SuKnitWitty, you have hit the CrackerJackPot. Sure enough....JimmyDon is a celebrity. His website JimmyDonCox, Western Artist is a place you gotta visit. Not only is he a Cowboy Artist, he's a RealTexasLegend. Seriously, don't miss a visit to his website. Maybe he'll be around Blaine's during the Reunion....Ya'll will really enjoy meeting JimmyDon Cox.

Speaking of Willie...There he is...'BiggerNDallas'. 'Baker' shared some of Blaine's History BeforeTheBrowns...all very colorful and interesting...all right there on the Walls of Blaine's Pub. Course, I was all ears about the History AfterTheBrowns....ReporterInstincts FlatTookOver my GRIT GoodManners. "So, Baker," I said, "Are there any pictures of Maggie & Steve as the NewOwners on the Wall?" "Nope", he said....."But...around here someplace are some pictures of Maggie and Sara Dancing on the Table." JACKPOT.....confirmed....The Maggie/Sara Incident! I quizzed a bit further, but Baker was not TellinAll....he's such a TexasGent.....of course....he's a '65er.

PS...I'm PurtySure 'TheTable' I sat and visited with JimmyDon and Baker is the One.

I did an I-Cord BindOff....A New Thingy for Me. You may BindOff however you choose. Here is the I-Cord BindOff. *Knit 1, slip 1 (knit-wise), Knit 1, pass over slip stitch, return the 2 stitches from RIGHT needle to LEFT needle and repeat from * (adjust tension of stitch after it is returned to Right needle). Very Cool look for the top of your ScrapBag.

Part III - No More Mystery
Yipee!! Lamkins and I have completed Part III. We have learned some new KnitTechs....making holes in your knitting....on purpose. It's where the handle threads through the top of the bag.
Then the I-Cord BindOff! Oh, Yes.....Been waiting for that one!!! Not so hard to do if you keep repeating the steps...Knit 1, Slip 1, Knit 1, PassSlipStitchOver, Move Two Stitches from Right Needle to Left Needle....Repeat...Repeat until all stitches are OFF.

Now we are ready for Part IV. Pockets! Yep, Two of Them...one on each side. Lamkin is looking a bit doubtful about picking up the PurlBumps that will attach the pocket to the Bag. But I have confidence in the SheKnits instructions. Better yet...I know that SusanB-Knits has already done this and she has given me a heads up on Part IV.

Even better HeadsUp are all the FINISHED Bags on Ravelry. I haven't told Lamkins that yet....She would be baaaaaing at me to get finished too.

Some have already Felted.....and OverFelted...not good. So there are some good points about being behind. Learning from Others MisKnits.

Points of Interest in San Angelo
When you come to the Reunion in October, you will find that San Angelo has some fun places to visit.

Historic Old Town offers antiquing, interesting shops and unique restaurants.

On a scouting trip in June, we found this fun place to shop:

Sassy Fox is just down the road from the hotel and has some crazy clothes in wild colors;

could be an inspiration for your early Christmas shopping,

or for a wild night on the town.

Also in Old Town is Eggemeyer's General Store, which contains every kitschey kitchen item that ever tempted you.

A trip to Old Town wouldn't be complete without a visit to Miss Hattie's Bordello Museum.

You will be able to join a tour of the Bordello on Saturday led by our very own Miss Hattie, Karen Barnes Smith.

Of course, Friday and Saturday nights you will be eating at the Reunion, but there's always lunch.......A couple doors down from the Bordello, you can have lunch at Miss Hattie's Restaurant and Saloon which has Victorian antiques and the original pressed-tin ceiling.

Also on the food tour, be sure to add the Butler's Pantry,which is in a historic San Angelo house and serves food made with all fresh vegetables and ingredients.

Where else can you get stuffed deep-fried avocado?

Scouting your food options : Vicki Neace, Anne Loftin Ball, Sue Hamm Jasper.

This is a job we did very well.

The Butler's Pantry has a cool and relaxing outdoor garden if you are fortunate enough to get a table outside.

We lived aboard our boat in Gloucester, MA for 12 years then traveled about 6000 miles up thru Canada and the inland waterways down to New Orleans.....

Texas Tech is still giving Wayne McPeak four year scholarships to play football—they hope he will make one season without breaking his ankle.

1965 Lobo Senior Prophecy

Texas Tech Did give Wayne a FullScholarship, and he DidNot Break his Ankle. So, the ProphecyWriters really nailed this one…..except for one little ‘A’ word....

ANKLE…should have been…AnyBones. It was the Wrist.

TexasTech Athletics gave him a NiceRedShirt for his Sophomore year…

Then the USArmy thought he’d looked so good in Lobo Green that they offered him a TwoYear Scholarship to wear ArmyGreen.

When asked about his ‘Favorite School Memory’, Wayne said, “That’s easy, First Grade and Mrs. Watson…she was so beautiful.” On that FirstDay, I was eating my SackLunch, sitting on the MerryGoRound and wondering …Where is Everybody? After that day, Mrs. Watson escorted me to the cafeteria.”

Mrs. Watson gave each of her First Graders the first part of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb.

Beverly Stanek turned down an offer to paint Troy Donahue’s portrait to take the job as head mechanic at the drag strip.

1965 Lobo Senior Prophecy

Beverly’s decision to turn down the offer was primarily based on Troy’s refusal to be painted on a Horse, wearing Buckskin, carrying a Calf, dragging a Litter loaded with Rocks into the Sunset, over the Mountains, Through the Woods, Across the Desert, and…the last straw…petting a Howling Coyote.

As for the Head Mechanic….KindaSorta….Did come True! Beverly Stanek-Rowin Hartman is the Head Mechanics Go-Fer and DoItAllGal for Hartman Farms. She’s a CottonGrown, TractorDrivin, WaterWellin and CottonPickin Woman….and finds time to be an All Things West Texas Painter.

She generously shares her talent each year at the Historic Fort Stockton Pioneer Days painting gourds and rocks for the School Kids. Beverly and her Mom, Maxine, are vendors at Arts and Crafts fairs throughout West Texas. Her Rock Paintings are in collections throughout the USA and her expertise in wildlife and desert painting is well known.

Beverly with the Southwest Divider she designed and built.

Hartman Farms are surrounded by majestic mesas and big sky. Cotton fields, cattle and Bev's Dogs keep the Hartmans busy year round. There's a few Rattlesnakes, too.

Beverly, still shares her Artists Talents with the Class of 1965 as Head of Decorating for Reunions. For the 45th Reunion in October….

Now, this is a MysteryBag, mind you, and I can not reveal any pattern particulars at this time. Part of the contract we agreed upon when we paid BigBucks (very reasonable BigBucks) to Knit this Bag...
I personally don't have EnoughBags and neither does Susan-B.

Lambkins was a big help in figuring out Part I. Susan-B 'splained' most of it to Lambkins and then Lambkins sheared with me. We can tell you that our Kit has PURPLE as the Main Color. This is the BagBottom. Hope thats Okay to say, SheKnits.

BLOG!!...Exactly What Is It?

Howdy Anne and 1965 Classmates,

I was going to give you a proper definition for 'Blog', but the Websters edition 1961 that my parents gave me when I graduated from college (I probably could have used it earlier) doesn't have BLOG listed. It should have been somewhere around blocky, bloke and blonde.

So here's a SuDefinIshun......BLOG - a place on the InterNet or InnerNet or EnterNet or WorldWideWeb.....really doesn't matter how you spell or misspell it.....it's not in 1961 Webster either. And, the thing is, I've relied on this book through the education of my child and now my grandchildren, thinking, "If it was good enough for me from the Class of 1965, then it should be good enough for them." No wonder my son has to use 'Spell Check' and my Grands call me NanaNitWit.

Anyway, back to BLOG....a place on the WorldWideWeb... which is based on…as far as I can tell on the Children's Nursery Rhyme, The IttsyBittsy Spider who went WebSpinBerserk after the water spout event flooded the WholeWideWorld. Okay....I got off for a sec...on the WWWeb where ANYBODY in the whole wide world via their Personal Computer(PC)....also not in my Webster....computer defined as; one that computes; an automatic electronic machine for performing calculations. Don't you think it's interesting tho, that the name WEBSTER (the book) is used on the WWWEB and those who use TheWEB are called WEBSTERS? Hmmmmm!

Anyway...back to BLOG....via personal computer, share 'Information' (mostly useless ramblings about themselves...speaking primarily of this blogger) with other people known as Bloggers, who also share their ramblings and then want lots more Bloggers who Blog to comment on their Blog. The Information is sent to somewhere in OuterSpace via WonderWhereWireless wires to this WonderWhereWeb which then spins it off to the intended ReceiversPC via their SecretCode that only they and their InterNetProvider know.....unfortunately, we have learned that the Provider CanNot keep a secret.

Wireless? I don't know about you, but I have a tangle of wires behind my PC that makes cooked spaghetti look straight. How they got wireless outta that mess, beats me, especially when even 1961 Webster defines wireless as having no wires.

Of course, I can’t stop now, so I’ll dig a bit deeper into my Vast Teknikal Knolledge Pool and explore some of the more teknikal aspects of Blogs, Blogging and Other TekieStuff. Speaking of explore….the EnterNetExplorer is truly Magic….click on that LilBluE w/OneSaturnRing, and there YaAre….YAHOO and GOOGLE. Finally, 1961 Webster has Yahoo…an uncouth and rowdy person…that doesn’t work…but, kinda explains why Mom sometimes called us kids ‘You Bunch of Yahoo’s’. Webster misses again with GOOGLE….closest word is goo goo…NO,Sue…they don’t want to hear it and you don’t have time or space. Seriously, tho, GOOGLE is a word heard through out the WholeWorldWeb….I know it’s really the WorldWideWeb….my Computer Information Technology DirectorSon told me, and after reading this, he is probably going to lie through his SpellCheck teeth that he was the first to show me the LilBluE.

About GOOGLE….What do you want to know? Name It or Type It (so thankful for Mrs. Walkers ‘I KanTipe’Class) in that little box…teknikly called a Window...another PCism …can’t see a thing through it, but Type ANY word there, hit ENTER Key and ENTER indeed….maybe that’s why some spell it EnterNet! Hmmmm! Sometimes I give GOOGLE a Test to find words I make up or misspell….It comes back with “Did you mean ______?” and shows pages and pages of what I meant.

The WholeWideWeb and the PC is just MindBogoogling. YaKnow, I can kinda see how most of the PCisms, like Desktop, Tool Bars, Window, WWW, Twitter, FaceBook, Blog, Google, Email, Ebay, and especially SpellCheck (which I dare not ClickOn) fit the function they are named for. So Whats With……The Mouse? I’m not sure I would have even touched it except I got tired of moving the arrows up, down and side to side. My Pre-PC mouse experiences were whapping them with a broom or enticing them with cheese for a quick strangulation. Once caught I still wouldn’t touch one…threw out the trap with the mouse and never used the broom in the house again. Now, my SmartMouse is my PCBestBud. Yep, we go HandOnMouse ... Googleing…Blogging….Surfing….and LOLing for hours and hours and hours. It’s ridiculous!

One thing I’ve decided through all this BlogBabble is that whoever came up with the word Blog must have been blonde….and that’s no joke…if I were blonde and the best Webster could do above me was blocky and bloke, I might have come up with a new word, too….or not…if he was a blocky blonde bloke!

So there you have it, Anne. I bet you never ask me another question about Anything! And to the ClassMates of 1965….if you dared to use your mouse and click on the link that led you here, Wayne said to tell you that I am NOT his Fault, and We will see you all in October for our 45th Reunion. Hot Off the Grill ! Eyelet Mock Cable Ribs! TastEZ 4 RowRack with MockSauce!

Did ya end #1 DblEyeletRib on the wrong side?

If YES.....UReady to Go.

If NO....Repeat Row 1 or 2 to end on the wrong side. Now yer ready.....right?

WhipOut a New ScrapSauce (color) and GetGoin on #2 Eyelet Mock Cable Rib!

The Knit 4 (rows 1,3) and Purl 4 (rows 2,4) at start and end of every row - makes seam edge.

Key: k-knit, p-purl, yo-yarn over, sl- slip stitch knitwise, psso-pass slip stitch over last 2 knitted stitches, pm-place marker.

Row 1: K4, pm, p2, *sl 1, k2, psso, p2; repeat from * to last 4 stitches, pm, k4.

Row 2: P4, k2, *p1, yo, p1, k2; repeat from * to last 4 stitches, p4.

Row 3: K4, p2, *k3, p2; repeat from * to last 4 stitches, k4.

Row4: P4, k2, *p3, k2; repeat from * to last 4 stitches, p4.

Repeat these 4 Rows twice more for 2 1/4 inches or 3 sets of MockCableRibs.

You will finish the last row on the RightSide. Purl 1 Row to end on WrongSide.

Supplies: Scrap Yarn - I'm using Worsted Weight sCraps...If you have Non-sCrap...Go WithIt.

Bond Knitting Frame with #4 Plate

US#8 Needles - 14 inch or Circulars

2 Stitch Markers - Optional

As pictured, the BabyBACKrib section is knitted via 'Bonda' Bond Knitting Frame.

Bonders follow the BONDERS Instructions and Others the NEEDLERS Instructions.

Here We Go!!

BONDERS

1. With WastesCrap Cast on 80 Stitches and work 4 rows.

2. Knit 60 rows....Change Colors as sCraps will complete a row.

(ends will be seamed in sides of bag - no need to weave in ...Yipee!)

3. With WastesCrap work 4 rows and remove from frame.

4. Pick up last row of stitches onto #8 Needles and remove 4 rows of waste sCrap.

End on Wrong Side

NEEDLERS

1. With First Choice of sCrap yarn...cast on 80 stitches on #8 Needles.

2. Knit 60 rows of Stockinette Stitch (Knit 1 Row-RightSide)(Purl 1 Row-WrongSide) or for MoreBoredum throw in a row or two of Whatever! Don't Ya Wish Ya HadABond?

3. Change Colors as sCraps will complete a row (ends will be seamed in sides of bag- no need to weave in....Yipee!)
End on Wrong Side Row

#1 Double Eyelet Rib

The Knit 4 (Rows 1,3) and Purl 4 (Rows 2,4) at start and end of every row - makes seam edge.

Key: k-knit, p-purl, k2tog-knit 2 stitches together, yf-yarn in front, sl- slip stitch knitwise, psso-pass slip stitch over last knitted stitch, pm- place marker.

On Right Side ...

Row 1. K4, pm, p2, *k5, p2: rep from * to last 4 stitches, pm, k4.

Row 2. P4, k2, *p5, k2; rep from * to last 4 stitches, p4.

Row 3. K4, p2, *k2tog, yf, k1, yf, sl 1, k1, psso, p2; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 4. P4, k2, *p5, k2; rep from * to last 4 stitches, p4.

Pretty TastEZ Ribs, Huh? So, if you Like Em.....Dip your #8's in the sCrapSauce and repeat the 4 Row Pattern 2 more times to have about 2 3/4 inches (ProfAnada Gauge). End with Row 1 or 2...which ever will prepare you to start #2 Ribs on Right Side.

Still hungry? Knit some more...but remember...there are more ribs with different sauces.

FREE PATTERN for Bond Knitting Machine
This pattern is easily modified to fit different yarn weight or other Bond Techniques.

Sample Knitted with:

James C. Brett Marble Chunky, Lion Brand Jiffy, Yarn Bee Topkapi

#8 US 14" Straight Needles #13 Wood Needles (Stix to Stay on Bag)

J Crochet Hook (Straps done in Tunisian Crochet)

Bond #4 Plate for Chunky Yarn

Cast On 60 Stitches – Knit 4 rows with Waste Yarn
With MC - Marble
Rows 1- 16 - placement for side seams to be sewn.
Rows 17-45 – back
Rows 45-60 – bottom
Rows 61-100 – front
With Waste Yarn – Knit 4 rows

With # 8 Needles & Jiffy - Back - Pick up and knit in Rib (k2,p2) 60 stitches
Remove waste yarn
Knit in Rib Pattern for 8 Rows
Row 9 - With #13 Wood Needles knit in Rib across. Stitches Stay on Wood Needles
Repeat for Front. Set end stitches on #13’s with Super Glue

With right sides together, fold bag in half. Seam sides starting at approx. Row 16 Mark.
Open and flatten side seam (still on wrong side) stitch across rows 45 – 60. Approx.
1 ½ inch from point. Turn Bag.

Lining: Layout bag on lining fabric. Cut lining at least 1 inch larger than bag for bottom and sides and 2 to 3 inches from top of needles. With right sides together, seam sides approx. ½ way leaving top open for bag opening. Seam across the bottom edge and lining bottom the same as for the bag. Do Not Turn Lining. Insert lining into bag, matching side seams and bottoms. Fold lining to Rib Band edge front and back starting on outside and working to center. Pleat excess lining in the center and stitch in place. (Lining will be fuller inside to allow for expansion) Embroidery Floss makes a nice stitch. Match color to bag. At bag opening sides, fold lining and tuck under rolled knitted edge. Blind stitch through bag.
Strap Options: Knit or Crochet
Sample Straps: Size J crochet hook – Tunisian Crochet or Afghan Stitch
Strand of Marble & Strand of Jiffy held together….Ch 4.
Strap Length 22 inches …Leave 5 or 6 inches at beginning and end to attach.
Strap Embellishment: Topkapi Ribbon Yarn woven with Tapestry Needle along sides and down the center.

Finishing Bag. Topkapi Ribbon Yarn woven through Rib Bands. Beads sewn along Rib Band bottom. Embellish inside with buttons or beads.
